A company renders services through a web app, spanning the entire cycle of insurance product support: sales, policy purchase, and settlement. This app processes sensitive customer data, manages policies, and streamlines financial workflows. With a growing portfolio, maintaining compliance, scalability, and high availability became a top priority.

Introduction:

Over the years, the current infrastructure of the client’s web app struggled to keep up with rapid business growth, strict compliance requirements, and increasing user demands. Because their self-developed app dealt with a lot of sensitive data, following the rules and being reliable was crucial for the business. The company had millions of customers across the country and held an in-house team of 40 to 50 engineers.

Therefore, the app needed a modern cloud-based infrastructure to support growth. However, old technology, inconsistent documentation, and manual processes were making it harder to come up with new ideas and putting the company at risk.

This is where Devox Software stepped in to redesign their infrastructure, move workloads to AWS and Azure, and provide automation at all levels. The end result was a future-ready environment with smooth end-user experiences.

The project was a joint effort between the client’s in-house engineering department and Devox Software’s cloud and DevOps experts.

Challenges:

The client faced several critical faults that needed to be rectified in the process of the revamp:

  • Security Gaps: Legacy infrastructure didn’t meet the latest security standards, putting the customer data in danger,
  • Poor Documentation: Inconsistent documentation resulted in a deep misunderstanding of existing system dependencies and restrictions,
  • Manual Processes: Many operational tasks lacked automation, causing inefficiencies and higher operational costs,
  • Cloud Migration: Transitioning from legacy setups to AWS and Azure required migrating EC2 instances, containerization, and configuring ECS clusters.

Devox Software collaborated with the client’s internal teams to implement a phased cloud modernization strategy:

  • Migrated legacy EC2 instances to a secure and scalable AWS and Azure environment.
  • Implemented containerization using Kubernetes and ECS for efficient resource management.
  • Enhanced CI/CD processes with Flux for seamless, automated deployments.
  • Introduced infrastructure as code (IaC) practices using Terraform and Vault to improve scalability and security.
  • Built automated monitoring and alerting with Datadog and Prometheus for proactive incident management.
  • Standardized documentation to ensure maintainability and faster onboarding of new team members.

Results:

As a result, the client has received a comprehensive solution that unites all major workflows, serving both like an ERP and a customer-oriented service. Via the web app personal account, users can choose the product they want, buy it, finalize the contract, pay the premium, file a claim, and get assistance or a status report on the settlement.

Additionally, the company was gathering statistical data from users to calculate insured event occurrence rates and adapt their underwriting policy accordingly.

Simply put, the client was content with functional and operational advancements in the app that significantly improved their business results as follows:

  • Increased Scalability: The infrastructure now supports a growing user base of 2 million users without downtime in 99.8%.
  • Improved Security: Systems are now compliant with the latest industry security standards, PCI DSS (SDP, CISP, AIS), PA-DSS, SOC 2 Type II, and GLBA.
  • Automation Gains: Incident management and operational tasks are now automated.
